CareBox Provides Cancer Patients With Free Care Supplies At Home

We all love getting care packages in the mail — from tasty treats at the holidays to hometown reminders if we’re living far from loved ones. Imagine the delight, then, when a package including items you not only want, but actually need, arrives on your doorstep — free of charge!

That’s the idea behind CareBox, an innovative resource for cancer patients that puts essential personal-care items right in their hands.

Why CareBox is Needed

When cancer patients are undergoing treatment, they need to keep both their bodies and minds strong to fight off the illness. However, that’s often easier said than done.

Treatments like chemotherapy weaken patients’ immunes systems, so even exposure to someone with a minor cold could be debilitating, or could even prove deadly; patients need to be both alert and prepared to fend off sickness. They also have to grapple with the side effects of cancer treatments, which can wreak havoc on the body, and with making adjustments to their daily routines to accommodate their changing conditions.

To help patients meet those challenges, a college student at University of Texas came up with the idea for CareBox.

How CareBox Works

CareBox is a one-stop shop resource for cancer patients.Patients can sign up on the site and make a list of items from which they could benefit.

Common CareBoxes include products like heating pads and neck pillows to help with muscle aches and pains, masks and gloves for protection and sick bags and ointments to treat the unfortunate byproducts of treatments.

Each patient has his or her photo and story, along with the type of cancer and wish list, published on the site. Good Samaritans can pick and pay for the products they wish to gift, and CareBox employees then buy, package and ship the items straight to the patient’s door.

Many cancer patients are already facing lengthy medical bills, so even though the CareBox items are mostly low-cost, every dollar saved can be a big help.

How You Can Help

CareBox staffers say they’ve seen donations from everyone from friends and families of patients to survivors to complete strangers.

Supporters are encouraged to get involved in the effort through a Contact page on the organization’s site. They can also visit the Shop Now page to dive right in and start purchasing items.

The public’s generosity has helped CareBox fulfill every order on its wish list, but it is still collecting basic items for future patients.

With items on the list starting as low as just $1.50, it doesn’t cost much to lend a helping hand — and the payoff of knowing that you helped brighten the day of someone who is struggle should be well worth it!

  11. I am filling this out for my husband. He has stage 4 metastatic lung cancer. It has spread from his lungs to his brain and to his bones. He is very sick and weak. He just doesn’t have the energy to do much of anything. He tries, but he just can’t. Anything that anyone would like to donate would be very much appreciated. His bones hurt a lot. He is getting to the point where he cannot stand for very long. His days are spent laying on the couch, or laying in the bed. His name is Danny Wardrip. He is 54 years old.
